Science of Facets and Diamonds
There are many steps to transforming a diamond from its mined form to a brilliant, sparkling gemstone. The step of faceting is the most important of all, studied for centuries by scientists and artists intent on creating the most beautiful diamond possible.
In fact, faceting is one of the oldest known trades.
Did you know that the first professional faceter's guild was formed in the 1300s? And faceting diamonds was done long before that throughout India and the Middle East.
To create a facet, the roughly shaped diamond is rubbed against another diamond until the chosen spot is level and smooth. Hundreds of years agothis was done by hand. Today it is done using a fast-turning lathe lubricated with linseed oil.
